Recording Guide

A few simple steps to help your submission come through clearly, so your feedback video can be as useful as possible.

What to Record

Film up to 10 minutes of your own playing — a full passage, a specific voicing you're working through, or a technical challenge you'd like a second opinion on. Shorter is completely fine if it captures what you want feedback on. Your questions and any repertoire/practice PDF go in the submission form, not the video itself.

Camera Placement & Lighting

Set up your device to the side of the piano, in a well-lit spot, so the keyboard, your hands, and your arms are clearly visible. If you'd rather keep your face out of frame, that's completely fine.

Audio

Keep your recording device or mic away from direct contact with the piano — resting it on the instrument can pick up vibration and distort the sound. Choose a quiet space so the recording is clear.

Uploading to YouTube

Upload your video as Unlisted — this keeps it accessible only to those with the link, while still allowing me to view it. Please title it with your name and the submission date. Once you've received your feedback, you're welcome to delete it.

Before You Film

Record a short test clip first to check that the picture and sound are both coming through clearly — it saves a re-shoot later.

One More Thing

Make sure your device is charged or plugged in before you start, so the recording isn't cut short.
